Draft government report projecting a surge of covid-19 cases

A draft government report projects covid-19 cases will surge to about 200,000 per day by June 1, a staggering jump that would be accompanied by more than 3,000 deaths each day. Read the story here.

The Washington Post (5/4, Wan, Bernstein, McGinley, Dawsey) examines “a draft government report” that projects coronavirus “cases will surge to about 200,000 per day by June 1, a staggering jump that would be accompanied by more than 3,000 deaths each day.” The draft report “predicts a sharp increase in both cases and deaths beginning about May 14, according to a copy shared with The Washington Post.” The Washington Post adds, “The White House and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention disavowed the report, although the slides carry the CDC’s logo.”

Politico (5/4, Oprysko) reports, “The White House on Monday acknowledged the existence of an internal administration document projecting as many as 3,000 deaths per day from coronavirus by June but asserted that the grim modeling had not gone through interagency vetting and ‘is not reflective’ of any projections from or analyzed by the White House’s coronavirus task force.”
